Outside was cold with a damp wind blowing. Florence was still beautiful, especially with the lack of tourists at that time of year. Dante walked beside Leo, stretching out his shoulders.

"Do you want to talk about what your mother said to upset you so much?" he asked.

"It's complicated."

"When is it not with you?" Dante teased.

Leo flipped him off. "My father left me a house in Venice, and nobody bothered to tell me about it."

"Did they have the opportunity to? I mean, you haven't exactly talked to them for what…five plus years?"

Leo raked his hands through his curls. "It's not that. It's the fact that it's my father's family home. I haven't been there in years, but I love that house."

"Leo, I don't understand what the problem is here," Dante said gently. "If it's a place that's important to you, this is a good thing."

"I don't know how to explain it. I'm going to see Niccolò everywhere when I go there. I've been so fucking angry at him for years now. I'm worried that it's going to hit me all at once, and I'm going to be completely useless."

Dante considered what he said and seemed to be trying to find the right thing to say back. "Why are you angry at him?"

"Because he was the only one like me, and he left me. I told him not to go to that meeting in Naples. I felt something was wrong, and he didn't listen to me. He went anyway, and they killed him. After that, everything changed. Gabriella most of all. She was never a gentle mother, but she got a coldness in her after he died. Whenever she looked at me, I know she saw him, and she was so angry about it," Leo said, the words coming out of him for the first time ever. "She hated the sight of me, Dante. She couldn't bear to even look at me. That's why, even though I thought it was stupid, I did as she asked and killed that entire family. It still wasn't enough for her. She wanted me to kill the innocents as well. I knew that Niccolò would never have allowed it, so I did what I thought he would do. I stood up to her and tried to get her to see reason. I wanted to be someone she could rely on, like he had been. And she shot me."

Before Leo could stop him, Dante pulled him into a hug. Leo was crying, and it was sudden and horrible. He couldn't control it, and everything hurt so goddamn much.

"You see? I can't even talk about the house, and I'm a complete wreck. Can you imagine what I'm going to be like when I actually go there? And we need to go there, Dante. All of my father's family history is there. Instead of fucking about on the internet, I'll be able to get my hands on everything we need straightaway."

Dante rubbed his back in soothing circles. "Maybe you need to go in order to purge some of this shit that you're feeling.
